Mirren, Carmichael set up LA outfit

Former Criminal Minds showrunner Simon Mirren and the former president of film at Content Media, Jamie Carmichael, have set up a new TV and film company together.

Atlantic Nomad will allow the two LA-based Brits to supply high-end, mainstream TV programmes and films to studios, networks, digital platforms and major independent distributors worldwide.

The company plans to create a slate of between six and 10 original series over the next 12 months from both the US and UK, alongside one or two theatrical film projects each year.

Described as a hybrid development, finance, production and distribution company, its first two projects will be The Knowledge, a UK espionage drama created by Mirren and David Wolstencroft (Spooks), and Hammerhead, a crime series set in the Californian port city of San Pedro.

The latter, created by Mirren, centres on a grieving mother who must decide between her loyalty to her God and her family, as she battles groups including the east coast mafia, west coast gangs and the government.

Mirren is widely known for writing and producing TV series such as Criminal Minds for Touchstone Television and CBS, Without a Trace for Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS, and Third Watch for NBC.

He also wrote for UK television series Casualty, Waking the Dead and Spooks and most recently co-wrote, produced and was showrunner on Versailles, alongside frequent collaborator Wolstencroft, who will continue to be involved with Mirren’s Atlantic Nomad projects.

Carmichael was the president of film at Content Media for 15 years, where he acquired, produced and distributed more than 250 titles, including The Cooler, Thank You For Smoking, Fish Tank and the Scientology documentary Going Clear.

Prior to Content, Carmichael was head of international distribution for Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Entertainment International. Content Media rebranded last year following its takeover by Blue Ice Group co-founder Steven Silver and Alliance Atlantis alum Peter Sussman, to form Kew Media Group.

Atlantic Nomad will make its debut appearance at MipTV in Cannes next month, with Mirren and Carmichael, who have known each other for two decades, set to begin discussions with distributors and platforms.

“The international ecosystem of how drama is created is experiencing a seismic change. Atlantic Nomad’s collective experience in developing, financing, producing and distributing global premium hit shows and films offers an undeniable bridge into the future of storytelling,” said Mirren.

Carmichael added that the firm is already working with new writers and that the company will be committed to fostering an “artist-friendly environment” for top writers, showrunners, filmmakers and emerging creative talent.
