Stan appoints ex-SBS exec Nguyen as programming chief

Crash Landing On You

Australian streamer Stan has appointed Ben Nguyen, former channel manager at pubcaster SBS, to the newly created role of director of programming.

Nguyen will report to Cailah Scobie, who was promoted from commercial director for content to chief content officer after Nick Forward resigned to take up the post of chief digital and content officer at MENA pay TV provider OSN.

“Stan are entering a new phase as the streaming market matures after launching as a plucky start-up, and I really identify with the approach they’ve taken to selecting content. I’m looking forward to bringing some of the SBS challenger spirit into my new role,” Nguyen told C21.

The exec, who starts at Nine-owned Stan on July 5, announced his departure from SBS in April after 13 years with the pubcaster, the last seven as channel manager.

He joined in 2008 as programme assessor, documentary and factual, before being promoted to senior programmer. In 2013, he was named senior programmer at SBS2, which relaunched, targeting the 16-39 audience with original content such as The Feed, Stand Up @ Bella Union, 19 Reasons To Love If You Are The One and The Eurovision Quiz.

At Stan, he will be reunited with SBS’s former acting head of scripted Amanda Duthie, https://www.c21media.net/news/sbs-drama-exec-duthie-heads-to-stan/ who joined the streamer as head of scripted in February.

Former ABC and BBC Worldwide executive Natalie Edgar has been appointed https://www.c21media.net/news/edgar-exits-abc-to-run-sbs-sbs-viceland/ channel manager for SBS and SBS Viceland.

Martin Kugeler is acting CEO https://www.c21media.net/news/stan-names-kugeler-acting-ceo/ of Stan while the company searches for a permanent successor to Mike Sneesby, who was promoted to Nine CEO on April 1.
