TLC develops taste for cupcakes

TLC has become the latest North American network to get sweet on a reality series about a fledgling cupcake business.

The Discovery-owned channel is adding DC Cupcakes to its summer line-up next month. The six-part series, from Big Fish Entertainment, is about two sisters’ attempts to build up their own cupcake empire.

The show focuses on Georgetown Cupcake, a small cupcakery that opened two years ago and now sells over 5,000 cupcakes a day. Each episode promises to go “beyond the frosting to capture the behind-the-scenes drama in their fast-paced, family-owned bakery.”

North of the border, meanwhile, Canada’s W Network has just started airing The Cupcake Girls, a 13-part docusoap about two friends’ “hectic and often hilarious journey to build a cupcake empire.” The show is made by Force Four Entertainment and distributor Cineflix International has recently sold the series to Rainbow Media’s WE TV.
